Mirror Mirror

Atsui Opens its 3rd Season on September 10 in conjunction with Swarm 11 with a group exhibit titled, Mirror Mirror.

With new works by artists:

Jay Senetchko
Lila Bujold
Nathaniel Sullivan
Suzanne Fulbrook
the Dark

The self portrait has been a method of self-exploration since humankind first gazed at their own reflection in a pool of water. With the invention of the mirror came a stronger fascination to capture one’s likeness. Self-portraits can be carefully staged to show the audience only what the artist wishes to project, or deeply revealing, inadvertently displaying feelings of anguish and pain.

Self-portraits have been used to test new techniques, make a signature mark, launch into self-study, remember the past, and as a way to release emotion. Whichever approach artists choose to conceptualize their image, they are each forced to study their own personas both physically and emotionally.

What do artist’s find when they search the mirror? For some, the self-portrait is cathartic experience, a letting go of pent-up emotions. For others, the process reveals new insights about themselves and their work. For all artists, the self-portrait is an exploration and an opportunity to see beyond the image in the mirror.

The exhibit runs until October 2nd 2010

Warming up for SWARM11

Sascha working the crowd at Between the Lines for SWARM10.

That’s right, summer’s just about over. Lame, we know, but that also means SWARM, and the launch of our 2010/2011 season.

Once again, SWARM has decided to go Twitter-style. We guess it worked last year? Anyway, everything you need to know about the whole Twitter/SWARM process you can find here. But basically it goes like this:

Make sure you’re following us on Twitter (click here) and while you’re at it you might as well follow PAARC too (go here).

We’ll be posting info and shout outs to our pals using #swarm11 (for the general SWARMy goodness) and #swarm11fr for our opening on Friday, September 10, 8 pm. It’s going to be awesome, and as soon as we know more, we’ll be dropping the hints.

Also, don’t forget to like us on Facebook. You can just click the link there on the right, or go to http://facebook.com/galleryatsui. Easy.

See you in September.

Blue Hare Stolen

There’s something missing from the entrance to the hedge maze at Van Dusen Gardens. On most days you’d see Minotaur and Hare, a wire sculpture created by British sculptor Sophie Ryder.

But some clown and/or douchebag stole the Blue Hare… again. That’s not to say it’s the same doucheclown, just that Blue’s been stolen before. Regardless, we don’t think it’s very funny. Whatever the case may be, we’re pretty sure that Blue Hare isn’t on his way to Watership Down. And in our opinion, whoever took him can silflay hraka.

If you know anything about the whereabouts of Blue, please leave a comment (all comments are approval-based, so we can promise that we’ll forward information on to the right people, and we’ll keep you anonymous) or you can contact any of the following:
